The earnings premium gained from a degree has fallen significantly in the last 20 years as graduate numbers have doubled, according to research. One in five graduates now earns less than the average hourly wage of those who only studied A levels, a change from one in seven in 1993, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS). The pay gap between those with a degree and those who hold just GCSE or A-level qualifications has also narrowed, analysis by the ONS suggests. In 1993 graduates earned on average 95 per cent more than the average wage of those who left school after taking GCSEs. But by last year the pay differential between graduates and GCSE holders had fallen to 85 per cent. The decrease casts doubt on claims that those who will pay more for their degrees from next year will be better off over their lifetime than those who don’t go to university. This casts doubt on the claims by the coalition government that they are actually giving students a good deal.
This is not the first time people have been given advice that life is being made better for them when in actual fact it turns out to be far from the truth.Not long ago we were advised to take out endowment mortgages and PPIs .
Dont jump on the government bandwagon.They are making it easy for their friends in the City when we all know the taxpayer had to bale them out and they still reward themselves for doing badly with obscene bonuses.I stil think the present generation of school leavers are being dealt a bad hand.What a way to treat our best brains who have tried hard at school and made the effort.they deserve better.
