Advice for school age runners
If you have just tried a cross country for the first time at Tameside inter school cross country you should feel proud to have represented your school.Sure there will be some kids at school who say they don,t fancy it .Often, not always ,they arent up to it.have no fitness level, cant be bothered but you did bother.Running is the basis of all team sports.Think about it .Most games involve running of one kind.Quite often these days once school stops organising games it stops for you and junior clubs frequently stop at 16 , whereas you can enter races like Manchester 10k or marathons until youre even more ancient than me.
If you have been selected for Tameside you have got in a good team that have a strong chance of winning. To keep it that way you need to train for the Greater Manchester race which is usually in February.Pe. teachers should be happy to advise you.even better join a running club.
If you ran and did quite well and youre in year 11 you often gain better marks for your GCSE exam practical work.If youre not that old bear it in mind. The examiners do not want to make life hard for themselves. Its straightforward evidence to see a pupil has come 22nd in the race and there are 19 schools in Tameside and they have sent their top runners to the event;looks good for that pupil. If you run for Tameside you could be looking at max marks.
In 2009 I have seen Tameside pupils running in Birmingham.Leeds,Blackburn ,Wirral,StHelens ,Manchester,They have competed at National Championships, Regional Championships,North of England championships and many have done well. You could do this as well. Its possible with a bit of determination , some hard training and belief .If you saw the two girls in the year 10/11 race come home side by side hardly out of breath thats because their friendship and respect for each other has been formed by running for Tameside and their local club. They dont go to the same school. Some such friendships last a lifetime. So if youre sat bored at home reading this make yourself a promise to go and give it a try , you never know what you might be capable of.
