Junior Athlete Education/ Gifted and Talented
This is especially relevant to year 11 pupils and sixth formers. It is my belief that Athletics sees a higher proportion of brighter academic pupils than many other sports. It is very important to find the right balance at this time of year between work training and chilling out. Sometimes its good to just chill and not do very much but relax. However if you are to do well on two fronts then planning and managing your time are essential whilst remembering to plan a bit of chill time in there as well.My daughter is pretty good at managing her time and I think that in this respect the girls do this better than boys.Perhaps you need to actually write it down sometimes so that you can see what you have to do.Alot of the Heads who panic about exam grades advise pupils to stop doing jobs stop sport until after the exams.I think sport can help with exams because you need some way of letting off steam and agression. It also helps you sleep. How good does it feel when you have trained really hard then had a bath or shower ? So dont give up training but take up planning.
Each school should have a gifted and talented co ordinator who should be looking after you as a gifted and talented person in P.E.If you are running for a club , school or the borough you are likely to get into that category. When you move on to sixth form your new place should be aware of your abilities and the help should continue. Some schools have someone who has done junior athlete training;ask if you don,t know.
If you qualify for the sixth form payments to pupils of families within certain income brackets you could be eligible for a grant from the Greater Manchester Sports fund if you are a county standard runner or above.it provides basic equipment and sometimes other expenses like petrol or accommodation if you have to stay overnight to compete in a national event. They will not give grants to people who live with Mum and Dad who have well paid jobs. The whole idea of these schmes is to keep talented young people in sport without them having to struggle too much and end up not going to events. For further details of both schemes see

If you have trouble send me a message or contact your local LEA Sports Development unit. There are some excellent people around today who can help you.I am happy to put you in touch with them, especially those in Tameside who I know have first class back up.You just need to know who to speak to.Sports Colleges like Wright Robinson and Hartshead will know about all this.Mr Shiner at West Hill is very knowledgeable.Anyone out of my area just keep looking around and asking there will be people out there. At the very top end of the scale there is an elite group of athletes getting help from Dame Kelly Holmes.I,m sure i,ve seen Dave Forrester from Liverpool Pembroke included in one of her elite groups.there is a desire to improve ATHLETICS IN THIS COUNTRY AND YOUNG PEOPLE ARE THE FUTURE.
