Adult Runners .Thinking of doing a Marathon/training for a marathon?

I would like to appeal to you to support a local charity ; Royal Manchster Childrens Hospital. Many runners enter races either with the intention of helping charities or it is a requirement of entry that you do so.Should you be in a position to help please read on.I have had direct experience of this hospital as my son was a patient in 2001.It is very frightening for children going into Hospital and I am so glad that my son went to this one.The difference to a normal hospital is that they work hard to make children feel positive .They have a play therapist on each ward which keeps their minds on things other than their illness. There is a hospital school service so they do not fall behind with their Education. When it comes to blood tests and other procedures the nurses are trained to make them more comfortable in accepting what is happening to them and for the uncomfortable procedures they have techniques which calm them .On site is usually a room where parents can stay overnight or they can sleep in a chair. My son was eight and i slept in a chair for 95 days so he would not wake up alone;maybe some may be thinking i overdid it but i promised him he would not be left alone. It was tough getting up and going to work but if you,ve hit the wall in the marathon you know what i mean , you soemhow get through it.My son made a remarkable recovery and I think it helped him staying positive. He was lucky enough to be able to return to sport , some are not and some lose their fight for life. The Health service gets a battering sometimes and occasionally it might be deserved but our exxperience was of a clean well run hospital which we are lucky to have in the Manchester area.In addition since then if ever there has been a sporting injury we have gone to Booth Hall casualty where you do not see adults who are drunk or have been fighting.
Of course RMCH are funded but many of the extras which keep childrens spirits up are provided by fund raising.its not much fun being in hospital on a Bank Holiday .So if you are a runner from Greater Manchester looking for a charity to run for then please consider this one.
